Shot 16 Pages In One Night!

On a bitterly cold morning in January, in Buffalo NY, we started our day by building the front desk set, dressing it with circa 1950's props, pre-lighting the individual set-ups the gaffer/key grip and I had determined on the scout day, got the actors in and out of make-up and wardrobe. By that time, it was late afternoon, just in time for "magic hour" so we could begin shooting "Of Dreams and Glory" night interiors.

After a brief discussion about motivation with the actors up first, I was informed that there was a problem with our one and only camera. We tried everything we could think of, but it wouldn't record! I did not want the actors to know so we "rehearsed" while frantically trying to figure out how to get another camera or we were all going to go home without a movie!

Then I remembered the camera assistant had a friend at a small rental house, but it was Sunday. He ended up calling him at home, talked him into opening and seeing if there was another HDV camera that could shoot 1080i 60i. It was a miracle, somehow everything worked out and 20 minutes I was shooting.

We shot all night, only having to sacrifice a few of the cover shots I wanted, but we had our movie. The way I look at it is if the mechanical shark would have worked properly on "Jaws" it might have been a very different movie.
